Morning routines

Sometimes I get the feeling that creating the perfect morning routine has become a competitive sport.

"Wake at 3am, make a note of all my dreams, one-hour meditation, 300 press-ups, 10 mile run while listening to a life-changing audiobook, make and consume fruit smoothie, rescue cat from tree, take a cold shower."

Totally realistic to do that every single day, right?

So, my own take on morning routines, is, well, you need to have your own take. You have to do what feels right for you. Absolutely no point in creating a fancy pants plan if you know it won’t fit in with your job or your kids or your dog.

Saying that, there is real power in carving out quiet time just to focus on yourself.

(Also, I don’t like to miss an opportunity to throw in one of my favourite quotes – ‘comparison is the thief of joy’. It’s the first time I’ve said it on these squares, but it won’t be the last.)

Here’s what works for me - I know that I ALWAYS have a more productive and positive day if I do all, or any, of the following:

1️⃣Step away from the phone – don’t even turn it on, and definitely don’t scroll the socials
2️⃣Journal – whatever pops into my head, it could be a few lines or a whole page
3️⃣Meditate, gratitude, affirmations – I do whatever I feel I need or want to do
4️⃣Read – anything (but not on my phone!)
5️⃣Write the top three things I want to get done today – helps keep me on track

Now, I’m not saying every morning looks like this. It doesn’t. I’m only human. But, it’s a guide and I know it makes me feel better.
