Gratitude
If I had to choose one thing that has helped boost my wellbeing and mindset over the last couple of years, it would be having a regular gratitude practice.
In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness.
Gratitude helps you:
1. Feel more positive emotions
2. Enjoy good experiences
3. Improve your health
4. Deal with adversity
5. Build strong relationships
All you need to do is list three things you are grateful for every day, it’s that simple, but here are some tips to help you get started:
You can say them in your head, but better to write them down (if you want an excuse to buy a new notebook, I fully endorse this)
Choose a set time of day - this makes it easier to create a habit
Remember, you are human (some days you will struggle) it's okay to miss the odd day or repeat yourself - I'm always grateful for my family, friends, a roof over my head and food in my fridge
Here’s what is key, and what I didn’t realise when I first tried this 15 years ago - the positive effects of a gratitude practice compound like interest. You might not notice the benefit of a daily or weekly practice, but after several weeks and months, you will. Don't stop once you start to feel the results!
Have a go at seeking out the positive today, and let me know how you get on! 🌟
