Savouring
Today I want to talk about the art of savouring.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By savouring, I don't just mean enjoying a good meal, I’m talking about what research scientists Fred Bryant and Joseph Veroff define as, “noticing and appreciating the positive aspects of life.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We often think about savouring as an act that happens in the present, but we can also savour past experiences by recalling them positively and savour future moments by anticipating them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The good news is that not only is it a skill we can learn and strengthen, but practising the technique of truly being present and savouring a moment helps intensify and lengthen positive emotion.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If we engage at a deeper level, our mind assigns more meaning and importance to a memory, so that it can later be recalled clearly and easily.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve already taken a few minutes to enjoy my coffee in silence watching the sunrise and I’m anticipating a beautiful lunch in one of my favourite restaurants.
What will you savour today?
